Thurmond is a small unincorporated community located in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. It is situated about 15 miles northeast of the town of Wilkesboro and is part of the larger Winston-Salem metropolitan area. The community is known for its scenic location along the Yadkin River and its proximity to Stone Mountain State Park. Thurmond was named after John W. Thurmond, a prominent local landowner, and businessman. Today, it remains a rural, agricultural community with a population of just under 300 people. Despite its small size, Thurmond has a rich cultural history and is home to several important landmarks and historic sites, including the Thurmond Depot, which now serves as a museum and visitor center, and the nearby Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest.
